Sugar Glider Cage Essentials: A Comprehensive Guide for 2023

Sugar gliders are small, nocturnal marsupials known for their unique ability to glide through the air with the help of a thin membrane connecting their limbs. These fascinating animals require adequate living conditions to thrive, and as a pet owner, it is your responsibility to provide them with a comfortable and suitable living environment. A sugar glider cage is an essential piece of equipment for housing these critters and replicating their natural habitat as closely as possible.

Sugar glider cages come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, which can make it quite challenging for pet owners to pick the right one. It is crucial to select a cage that is spacious, well-ventilated, and made from a sturdy and non-toxic material. The bars of the enclosure must be close enough together to prevent escape while also allowing for proper airflow. Furthermore, sugar gliders are active animals that require ample space for climbing and gliding within their enclosure.

When considering a sugar glider cage, factors such as its durability, ease of cleaning, and the available space for attaching toys, exercise wheels, and nesting pouches should be considered. It’s also vital to account for the dimensions of the cage, ensuring that there is adequate room for your sugar glider to move around without being too cramped. The PawHut Metal Small Animal Cage offers a spacious, durable, and easy-to-clean environment for your sugar gliders.

Pros

  • Spacious and multi-level design
  • Easy to move with four rolling wheels
  • Convenient pull-out tray for cleaning

Cons

  • Assembly instructions could be clearer
  • Doesn’t have a grate over the bottom tray
  • Ramps may require additional securing

We recently set up the PawHut Metal Small Animal Cage and found it to be a great home for our sugar gliders. The spacious, four-tiered design allowed for plenty of climbing and exploration while the included hammock provided a comfortable spot for them to rest.

We appreciated the portability of this cage, especially with the four rolling wheels which made it incredibly easy to move from room to room or into sunlight whenever needed. The pull-out bottom tray also made cleaning a breeze, saving us a significant amount of time.

However, we did find some challenges while assembling the cage. The instructions provided were not as clear as we would have liked and required some guesswork. Additionally, we noticed that there was no grate over the bottom tray, and while this made cleaning easier, it might not be ideal for everyone. Also, the ramps connecting the various platforms in the cage seemed a bit flimsy and might need extra securing to prevent accidents.

In conclusion, the PawHut Metal Small Animal Cage offers an excellent home for sugar gliders with its spacious design and convenient features. While there are a few minor drawbacks, overall, we believe it is a great option for people looking to provide a safe and engaging environment for their sugar gliders.

The Mcage Extra Large 5-Level Cage is great for those seeking an affordable and spacious option but may require additional reinforcement.

Pros

  • Extra spacious size for a variety of small animals
  • Tight 3/8-inch wire spacing to prevent escape
  • Slide-out bottom tray for easy cleaning

Cons

  • Flimsy and may require additional support
  • Assembly can be challenging
  • Some units may arrive with warped or bent bars

The Mcage 55″ Extra Large 5-Level Cage caught our attention with its large size and affordable price point. We found the extra space allowed our small pets like guinea pigs and sugar gliders to explore and play comfortably. Additionally, the tight 3/8-inch wire spacing ensures that our critters stay safely inside and the slide-out bottom tray makes cleaning much more manageable.

However, upon assembly, we noticed this spacious cage can be a bit flimsy and may require extra support, such as zip ties, to ensure stability. The assembly process itself wasn’t the easiest, and we recommend having a second person to help. Some of the cage sides were slightly bent or warped, which took more effort to fit them together properly.

We were satisfied with the 4 included ladders and platforms, which are also paw-safe. The free water drinking bottle was a nice addition as well. Overall, we believe the Mcage 55″ Extra Large 5-Level Cage offers a significant amount of space for your small pets at an affordable price, but the structure may need additional reinforcement for better security and stability.

Mcage 70″ Extra Large Wrought Iron Cage

This spacious and sturdy cage is perfect for sugar gliders and other small animals, providing ample room for play and comfort.

Pros

  • Spacious and sturdy wrought iron construction
  • Tight 1/2-inch bar spacing for safety
  • Chew-free, easy-to-clean design

Cons

  • Some inconsistencies with door locks
  • Might need extra platforms and ladders
  • Assembly without instructions can be challenging

We were impressed with the generous size and durability of the Mcage 71″ Extra Large Wrought Iron Cage. The tight 1/2-inch bar spacing made us feel confident that our pets were safe inside, with no worries about escapes or stuck limbs. The metal shelves and ladders also proved to be paw-friendly, thanks to their cross-wire design.

While we loved the chew-free construction and easy-to-clean pull-out tray, we did notice some inconsistencies with the door locks. On the two separate orders we made, the locks were different, making one more difficult to use than the other. This issue didn’t impact the overall functionality of the cages, but it’s something to keep in mind.

One aspect we wished the Mcage 70″ could improve upon was the inclusion of more platforms and ladders. Our pets love to climb and explore, and additional platforms and ladders would have been a significant bonus. Be prepared for a bit of assembly when you receive this cage, and while it’s not too challenging for those with experience, it did come without instructions, which can be a hurdle for first-time builders.

Overall, we believe the Mcage 70″ Extra Large Wrought Iron Cage is ideal for sugar gliders and other small animals due to its spacious, sturdy, and safe design. Though there are a few minor drawbacks, this cage remains a quality choice for providing your pets with a comfortable and engaging environment.

Buying Guide

When looking for the perfect sugar glider cage, there are several factors to consider to ensure the health and happiness of our pets. In this buying guide, we will discuss the essential features for an ideal sugar glider cage.

Size: One of the first aspects to consider is the size of the cage. Sugar gliders are active animals, and they need ample space to glide, jump, and climb. We recommend choosing a cage with dimensions of at least 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 36 inches tall. Remember that larger is always better for these energetic creatures.

Bar Spacing: The spacing between the bars is equally crucial, as sugar gliders might try to squeeze through or get stuck if the bars are too far apart. Aim for a spacing of no more than half an inch to ensure their safety.

Build Material: It is vital to choose a cage made from safe, non-toxic, and durable materials. Powder-coated metal and stainless steel are ideal choices to resist rusting and corrosion over time, ensuring the longevity of the cage.

Ventilation: Proper ventilation is necessary to maintain a healthy environment for sugar gliders. Mesh or wire sides are preferred to solid materials to allow for sufficient airflow.

Ease of Cleaning: Maintaining a clean habitat is essential to the well-being of our pets. Look for a cage with removable trays, doors, and floors for easier cleaning and maintenance.

Accessories: Lastly, consider the inclusion of accessories and features that will keep sugar gliders entertained and engaged, such as climbing branches, swings, hammocks, nesting pouches, and toys.

By considering each of these factors, we can find the perfect sugar glider cage that meets the needs of our pets and ensures their health and happiness for years to come.
